Computer Jobs in Newfoundland – Part 3

In Computer Jobs in Newfoundland – Part 1 and Part 2, Newfoundland Computer Resources looked at the public sector and the opportunities for employment in these particular areas.  Today’s post is about the private sector in Newfoundland and Labrador and the potential for finding computer related employment with private firms.

Most of the computer jobs in the private sector in Newfoundland and Labrador will be concentrated on the Avalon Peninsula – primarily in the St. John’s and surrounding area.  With the bulk of Newfoundland’s population concentrated on the east coast of the island and the recent oil-industry boom, it makes sense that the majority of job opportunities occur in this area.

However, there are computer jobs available in other parts of Newfoundland.

On Newfoundland’s west coast, one of the largest privately owned companies is the Coleman Group of Companies.  Maintaining as many as 18 different retail outlets, supermarkets and furniture stores, the Coleman Group of Companies is supported by an IT department located in its headquarters in Corner Brook, NL.

At this location is a fully staffed IT division that employs network specialists, programmers and help desk support people.  For anyone looking for employment in the computer field in Western Newfoundland, dropping a resume off to this location is a must for finding a job in the IT industry.  Offering reasonable pay and benefits, Coleman’s is an option for those looking for a computer job in Western Newfounland.

Additionally, Western Newfoundland is home to the island’s only paper mill – Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd.  While the mill has in recent days been forced to deal with many market pressures, its operations still requires IT support.  A once prized computer job, many are left wondering about the future of the paper industry as a whole and leaves many questioning the stability of being employed in this industry during such times.

On the Avalon Peninsula, for those who are seeking employment in the computer industry, there are more options.  Companies such as X-Wave Solutions, ZedIT Solutions and InfoTech Canada are just some of the many computer companies and IT solution providers in the area.  These companies have larger  operations and not only support clients in Newfoundland, but across Canada and internationally.

All are known for their great compensation and benefit packages and have been in the information technology industry for years, weathering many of the ups and downs experienced by smaller companies.

St. John’s is also home to the Newfoundland Association of Technology Industries, a membership based organization listing all technology industries in the province of Newfoundland.  Searching through their membership list is a definite must for the job hunter looking for computer-based employment within Newfoundland and Labrador – especially when the bulk of their membership is located in the eastern part of the island.

While private sector computer jobs in Newfoundland are a little harder to find, there are many options open to the savy job-seeker, especially in the eastern part of the province.
